Dynamic Show Review | NYC | Dynasty Electric | Chappo Album Release Party | 11.8.11
Dynasty Electric
The best best part of living in NYC, is that at night, everything is possible. After covering the packed Kishi Bashi show at the Living Room, Katie Henry and myself were invited to the Chappo album release party for their new record Plastique Universe II:
Pisces Princess, going on at the GlassLands. Gracias, Mr. LaGanke. Always game for more and more and more and more, Katie and I headed deep into the heart of Williamsburg to see what all the rock was about.
Entering the lounge we quickly found out that Dynasty Electric’s version of rock is potent high-powered pure energy. When Jenny Electrik’s (yes, her real name, how appropriate) voice meets Seth Misterka’s guitar, it’s time to break out your dancing shoes. Even with their track “Spell of Time,” where they give a little nod to the Steve Miller Band classic “Fly Like an Eagle,” they still managed to rip it. And rip it hard.
Dynasty Electric
To be honest with you, we really had no idea what to expect. We were running on empty man, but Dynasty Electric brought a certain life-fuel to the party that was definitely wanted, and certainly needed if we were going to go on. We knew we were back in the groove though when they went into “Electric Love,” and when the lyrics, “Set the dance floor on fire,” were put out into the atmosphere, that’s exactly what the Williamsburgh community did. Infusing Zeppelin soul, with Debbie Harry bravado and a touch of Skrillex dubstep — Dynasty Electric is positioning themselves as a band with threat level “severe” capabilities (that’s the red one). Keep an eye out.
Chappo
Provocative and wild! After getting it started up, you knew the Chappo boys were in full effect when all the girls were a dancing, friends were playing cameo drum solos while standing on…drums…and half the crowd eventually took over the stage during an all out dance party closer. Ish, was Bananas foster we tell you! Even Kishi Bashi ended up rolling through. But on a for real note for a second, Chappo brought great fun to their performance with their unique showmanship and by keeping it all inclusive. We’re excited to check out the EP and after a night where it looked like things were slowly coming to an end, the city made us think twice — thank you.
