NO SLEEP TILL BROOKLYN
Lately New York City has been privy to all types of natural occurrences. You want ground shaking? We got quakes. You want crazy wet windy action? Meet our girl Irene. So during one of the rainiest summers to date, the fellas from TV on the Radio decided to test out mother nature and dare her to rain for a fourth straight night. We’re proud to say - mother nature saw “light!”
Weather now cooperating, the gents took the stage after Broken Social Scene, on what turned out to be a most glorious evening at the Williamsburg Waterfront. Fashion Night what? Fashion Night who? Hitting us with both old jams and new tunes, I’d say things got started when Tunde Adebimpe and the boys broke into one of their latest, “Will Do.” Mellow yes, crowd awakening - quite certainly. As they continued, and at the appropriate moment, Tunde spoke briefly about the passing of bassist Gerard Smith. He spoke of Gerard’s major influence on the band. He spoke of the bands undying love for Gerard. And refreshingly, what we don’t hear often enough - he spoke the truth. About music, about life, about it all.
Inspired, the guys ripped into go to’s,”Staring at the Sun” and “Wolf Like Me,” before calling it a set. The encore was SUPER SOLID. “DLZ” was the jump off, but before rocking out some “Dancing Choose,” Tunde decided to teach the crowd about the bands mystical powers of controlling the weather. Take that Al Roker. Telling the fans that “Anyone can do it,” he showed us how to magically make light appear from thin air by simply shouting out “1-2-3 light!” - before making the stage spark up like a Christmas tree. Ending the festivities with “Satellite,” the Brooklynites truly showed the city who was boss by reminding us that you don’t need Fashion, when you can make light.
